A general cargoship has sunk after a collision off Vietnam.

All nine crew were evacuated from the 3,100-dwt Viet Thuan 68 (built 2008) on to the vessel it was in collision with, named by Vietnamese media as Phuong Linh 16.

The Vietnam Coastal Information System had received an alert on 6 March.

But it received no response from the Viet Thuan Transport ship when contact was attempted.

Two other merchant vessels were diverted to the scene and Phuong Linh 16 transferred support pumps to the stricken ship.

It also towed it to port, but the damaged pumps could not prevent it sinking.
