Russia’s oldest maritime transport university has signed up to become the country’s affiliate to the Nautical Institute, the international body that represents maritime professionals who control seagoing ships.

The Volga State University of Water Transport was recently formally admitted as a "Nautical Affiliate" of the institute, opening the way for its faculty and students to share their knowledge and insight. Rector Professor Igor Kuzmichev received a certificate marking the event from Captain Boris Dunaevsky, the honorary secretary of the institute’s Baltic state's branch.

Dunaevsky told TradeWinds that the institute undertook significant research to select the university, which has six branches along the Volga river including its headquarters in Nizhny Novgorod and was founded in 1930.

“The spirit of our negotiations was serious and friendly, with open interest on both sides,” he said. “It was agreed that future cooperation between the university and the Nautical Institute would be mutually beneficial.”

The university has also agreed to become a supporter of the institute’s Mariners’ Alerting and Reporting Scheme.
