A Yang Ming containership has lost 83 forty-foot containers in treacherous seas off Australia.
NT News reported that the 4,250-teu YM Efficiency (built 2009) was caught in large swells en route from Kaohsiung in Taiwan to Sydney's Port Botany on Thursday night.
It lost the boxes off Newcastle, while a further 30 containers on board were severely damaged.
A Yang Ming spokeswoman confirmed to AAP there were no dangerous goods or marine contaminants inside the containers.
"There is no security concern about the condition of the vessel," she said.
"As for the containers, Yang Ming will inform the customers and discuss with P&I for follow-up."
Australian authorities have sent a jet to assess the ship for damage and help locate boxes.
