Columbia Shipmanagement (CSM) is stepping up its presence in the Middle East with the launch of a new office in Dubai.

The Schoeller Holdings company already has a base in Saudi Arabia, where it envisages big growth potential.

The focus in Dubai will be on full technical and crew management services, as well as the full range of Columbia Group maritime services.

Vessel digitalisation and optimisation services are also promised, including procurement, training, catering, crew welfare and newbuilding consultancy.

The base will also act as a valuable springboard for the new entity’s expansion into the luxury aviation, super yachtand cruise management sectors in Dubai, CSM said.

Xanthos Kyriacou, regional managing director at Columbia Group, added: “Dubai’s role as a dynamic maritime centre and our established relationships in the area make it the ideal setting for our new office.”

He described the city’s location as enhancing connections with key players in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

“Moreover, Dubai’s advanced logistics infrastructure, and the presence of a diverse maritime community with cutting-edge facilities, all align perfectly with our goals to evolve and lead in supporting local partners through our maritime services platform,” Kyriacou said.

Columbia Group chief executive Mark O’Neil sees the United Arab Emirates’ maritime industry as offering huge potential not only in ship management but for the group’s platform of integrated maritime services.

“The new Dubai office allows us to enhance our relationships and explore new business avenues, emphasising our dedication to growth and excellence both in the region and globally,” Kyriacou said.

Turkish deal sealed

Last week, CSM strengthened its operations in Turkey with a deal to run the fleet of Istanbul owner Transoba Denizcilik.

The manager said the agreement underlined its commitment to the Turkish market after opening an office there last year.

The Turkish bulker company was set up by the Transoba family in 1994 and owns three supramaxes, built in 2010, 2011 and 2013.

Columbia will take on ship management duties for the company.

The group will also supply and manage multinational crews, with Turkish masters and engineers.

CSM Turkiye and CSM Deutschland will work together to ensure smooth operations, CSM said.
