Ship manager OSM Thome has revealed a new cooperation deal with a US start-up to boost its cruise operations.
The company will pair up with Florida-based Ship Management Group (SMG), which was established in September last year by experienced industry executive Jim Barreiro de Leon.
The partners will focus on ocean and river cruises, taking in technical management, crewing, travel, insurance, project management and procurement services.
“This partnership aims to leverage the combined expertise and resources of both entities to deliver unparalleled value and innovation,” the companies said.
OSM Thome, formed last year by the merger of managers OSM and Thome, has about 1,000 ships on its books.
Chief executive Finn Amund Norbye said: “This strategic alliance with SMG represents an important step in OSM Thome’s commitment to expanding our service offerings into the cruise sectors.
“Together, we are set to introduce a new paradigm in maritime management, blending our robust capabilities with SMG’s innovative approaches to cater to niche markets effectively.”
Barreiro de Leon, CEO of SMG, said that joining forces aligns with his company’s vision to redefine passenger ship management.
‘Innovation and excellence’
“Our collaboration will not only enhance our service spectrum but also foster a culture of innovation and excellence in the maritime industry,” he added.
OSM Thome employs 29,000 seafarers and 2,000 onshore staff, with offices in 22 countries.
It is headquartered in Arendal, Norway, southwest of Oslo.
Barreiro de Leon was president and CEO of CMI Ship Management until 2022.
Before that, he spent 20 years at V.Ships Leisure in the US, finishing as its managing director.
