There were red faces at ship demolition specialist Ed McIlvaney’s annual EBM/Sean Hadfield Memorial golf day, but that was down to the weather rather than the players’ performance.

In fact, almost half of the 37 golfers taking part achieved scores of at least 30 points.

After a cloudy start, the sun burst through and by the time everyone returned to the 19th hole at Benton Hall Golf & Country Club in Witham, Essex, cold beers were the order of the day.

Representatives from CM Lemos, SSY, Clarksons, DC Miles, Vickery Costs, NKD Maritime, Ocean Shipbrokers, JV Shipping and Mike Needham Shipbroking were joined at the event by industry retirees such as Leigh Roberts, Tony Masters, David Cross, Steve Kelley and, of course, McIlvaney himself.

Cross inadvertently went to the wrong golf course but ended the day receiving the Valiant Effort trophy for, in McIlvaney’s words, the “extremes” he went to in getting to Benton Hall.

Ex-Galbraiths’ broker Masters collected the EBM Challenge trophy, which is open to shipping competitors, with 40 points. The Sean Hadfield Memorial trophy, open to all, went to Leon Griffiths, a close friend of McIlvaney, who amassed 39 points.

Winning woman

The ladies’ trophy went to Sue Ballard, wife of SSY’s Steve Ballard, who carded 36 points.

Masters also won the Longest Drive award, around 290 yards off the forward tee. Stuart Jones collected the men’s Nearest the Pin trophy, and Maureen Williams won Nearest the Pin for the ladies.

Roberts, who made a 450-kilometre (280-mile) round trip to attend, thanked McIlvaney for founding the event, which is in its 13th year. Roberts has played in 12 of the tournaments.
