Shipbroker Clarksons has beefed up its green transition team by bringing in “industry heavyweight” Johan Tutturen from DNV.

The executive is currently vice president for special projects in gas at the Norwegian class society giant.

He will be joining the London-listed broker as senior technical adviser, with a key focus on CO2 issues.

“The appointment is a testament to the scale of the challenge of decarbonising shipping and the level of expertise required to advise our client base on the complexities at hand,” Clarksons said.

Tutturen joined DNV in 2008 and has more than 30 years’ experience in the maritime oil and gas industry.

He has been country manager for DNV GL Japan, head of the newbuilding department at the Oslo head office and global business director for LNG carriers and floating storage and regasification units.

In his current role at DNV, he specialises in the shipping of hydrogen and CO2.

Clarksons set up the green transition desk in 2020 to offer decarbonisation strategies, guidance on operational emissions reduction and insight to inform fleet renewal.

This involves working closely with broking colleagues.

Tutturen will bring greater technical insight to the complexity of transporting CO2 and the use of alternative fuels such as ammonia and hydrogen, the broker said.

Richer insight

“Clarksons will now be able to provide a richer and more informed end-to-end service of strategy, technical insight, asset broking and chartering across the breadth of the gas market,” it added.

Green transition team head Kenneth Tveter explained that clients are facing challenges on many fronts.

“We are in the middle of an energy crisis, whilst needing to decarbonise, needing to understand the new regulation and emerging ship technology. Meanwhile, access to capital is limited but societal expectations are growing,” he said.

“There is a danger that these complexities could stagnate the industry’s progress towards lowering emissions. Our role is to help clients navigate this pathway successfully, mitigate risk, help them take advantage of the opportunities, and in doing so minimise the impact of shipping on the environment.”

The new recruit starts on 1 June and will be based in Oslo.

“The investment in headcount demonstrates Clarksons’ ambition to grow and our commitment to enabling global trade and leading positive change,” the company said.
