American Bureau of Shipping said it has won a $9m follow-on contract with the US Coast Guard (USCG) in relation to designs for future vessel needs.

The purchase agreement with the classification society's ABSG Consulting arm is with the USCG's technical division, which is helping design new cutter and polar ice breaker vessels.

ABSG says it will provide technical authority for human systems integration for the new vessels. That includes human factors engineering, manpower, personnel, performance support and training, occupational health, habitability and personnel survivability for the new vessels.

The goal is that systems are "optimised with the operators and maintainers in mind to promote safety and confirm mission success," ABS said in a statement.

"ABS Group's Global Government team has provided enterprise risk management services to public entities worldwide for over 20 years and will work together with the USCG to continue our support in the vitally important area of human systems integration," said ABS senior director Joseph Myers.
