Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ shipbuilding and offshore division has made a ¥300m ($2.7m) operating loss in the first quarter fiscal 2019.
In the same period in the previous fiscal year it made a ¥1.3bn profit.
The Japanese shipbuilder is putting the loss down to lower production levels over the period.
Despite the loss Kawasaki has had some success in building up its orderbook.
Kawasaki said it had won ¥2.15bn in newbuilding orders in the period understood to include two VLGCs for domestic owners.
That boosted the orderbook up to ¥100bn in value including two LNG carriers, five VLGCs and two submarines.
Kawasaki is currently concentrating production at its main Sakaide shipyard which it has dedicated to LNG and VLGC construction.
Overall Kawasaki’s combined business lines including aerospace, rolling stock, energy and motorcycles achieved first quarter sales of ¥350.7bn, an operating profit of ¥1bn and a net income of ¥8.2bn.
