Danish designer Knud E Hansen has revealed its design for new hybrid Grimaldi Group ro-ros that will have zero emissions in port.

It has signed a deal with Nanjing Jinling Shipyard in China for the blueprints.

Grimaldi ordered an initial six ships for $400m at the yard in April.

The first 64,000-gt ship is due in 2020.

It will be able to transport over 7,800 lane metres of rolling units, equivalent to approximately 500 trailers.

The “Grimaldi Green 5th Generation” (GG5G) vessels will use electricity in port through large lithium batteries.

Knud E Hansen managing director Finn Wollesen said: "It’s been a pleasure to cooperate with Grimaldi on the design of these vessels.

"The collaboration has been very fruitful and enabled us to develop a new generation of vessels that represents real advancement in terms of sustainability and efficiency by using various new technologies.”

The batteries will be recharged during navigation, through shaft generators and with the aid of 600 square metres of solar panels.
