Croatian yard tycoon Danko Koncar is in talks to resurrect a cancelled Kuwaiti newbuilding at troubled Uljanik Group.

The businessman is discussing a plan with Livestock Transport & Trading to revive a deal for a 13,700-dwt livestock carrier at the yard.

Koncar, who owns compatriot shipbuilder Brodotrogir, would commit to building the ship with Uljanik's bankruptcy managers, the daily Glas Istre said.

The Kuwaiti owner would finance the construction.

Koncar had previously agreed a deal to become a strategic partner at Uljanik, but pulled out.

The idea now is to use Uljanik's infrastructure and employ some of the workers dismissed from the yard.

The contract, dating from 2015, was torn up in April. The ship was due in December.

Uljanik has been struggling with cash flow, wage arrears and strikes. It has lost most of its newbuilding contracts as a result.

Croatia's finance minister Zdravko Maric said on Thursday taxpayers had handed over HRK 4.42bn ($665m) in state guarantees to owners of cancelled ships.
