Samsung Heavy Industries is marketing new eco designs for LNG carriers and container ships.

The South Korean shipbuilder said the vessels will help to reduce carbon emissions despite an increase in cargo space and will feature green and digital convergence technology.

Samsung is holding a “technology roadshow” in Europe to showcase the concepts behind the “3-cargo tank” design for LNG carriers.

It said the design would help to increase efficiency compared with standard four cargo tank vessels.

“The boil-off rate has improved by more than 5% as an area where LNG touches the cargo tank is reduced,” said SHI.

“The maintenance costs are also greatly reduced due to a decrease in the number of equipment and parts for each cargo tank.”

Samsung said it has received approval in principle from Lloyd’s Register for the design which is also being developed with French LNG cargo containment system designer GTT.

As for the newly developed container ship, SHI claimed that there would be additional space to load 8% more containers. This is done by separating a ship’s operating and cabin areas.

“[The ship] was designed to use methanol and ammonia as a fuel in the future and has received reviews by shipowners who want to reduce carbon emissions,” said the shipyard.

Athens roadshow

Athens was the first stop for the four-day roadshow. Some 35 companies including major shipowners such as Minerva, GasLog, Shell, Total and classification societies attended the roadshow.

Besides promoting the new ship designs, Samsung is also marketing eco-friendly ship technologies such as carbon capture storage and fuel cells.

SHI’s vice president Jang Hae-ki said the roadshow had received a favourable response from ship owners.
