UK-based Scotline Marine Holdings has ordered the fourth vessel in a series of multipurpose newbuildings in the Netherlands as it marks 40 years of operations.

But the design for this one has been updated to make it the first hybrid UK coaster.

The Essex-based owner said it had exercised an option for a 4,800-dwt Trader-type ship to be called Scot Isles at the Royal Bodewes yard.

The vessel will be launched in the third quarter of 2021.

The third ship in the series, Scot Ranger, is still under construction and will be launched next month for delivery in the first week of 2021.

No price has been given for the option, but VesselsValue assesses the second vessel, delivered this January, as worth $8m. The total fleet of 10 vessels, excluding the declared option, is worth $42m.

The 90-metre newbuilding will be powered by a MAK engine and fully container-fitted with Swedish ice class 1A.

The cargo vessel will sail under the British flag and be classed by Lloyd's Register.

The ship is identical to Scot Ranger except for its hybrid capability.

Hybrid breakthrough

Scot Isles will be fitted with an array of batteries that can be charged by shore power.

"The use of batteries will partially avoid the use of generators. This again demonstrates Scotline’s commitment to a modern and environmentally friendly fleet," Scotline commercial manager Jon Millatt said.

Scotline added that throughout the build of the first three vessels it has had a regular and open dialogue with the yard to look at different design ideas and concepts.

The company operates another six third-party vessels across northern Europe. This year marks its 40th anniversary.

Cargoes include forestry products, bulk and project loads.

Scotline also owns terminals at the UK ports of Rochester and Inverness.
