d’Amico International Shipping has purchased a chartered-in MR product tanker from its owner.
The Milan-listed shipowner said it exercised a purchase option for the 50,000-dwt Crimson Pearl (built 2017), paying $31m for the Minaminippon Shipbuilding-constructed vessel.
The option was part of the ship’s charter contract.
The Equasis shipping database shows that the Crimson Pearl is owned by Taiei Naviera, a Panamanian-registered company that Japan’s Chiba Shipping Group lists as one of its affiliates.
d’Amico International chief executive Carlos Balestra di Mottola said he is “glad” to announce the acquisition of a ship from a top-quality yard that has been in the company’s fleet since it was constructed.
“Through this transaction, we acquire a young and high-quality vessel at an attractive purchase price, around 30% lower than its current market value,” he said.
d’Amico International is scheduled to take delivery of the tanker, which has eco engines but no scrubber, between September and October of this year.
Maritime Strategies International’s MSI Horizon platform estimates that the Crimson Pearl is worth $45.4m.
The Italian shipowner’s latest move is not likely to be the last strike on a purchase option.
TradeWinds reported in August that d’Amico International wanted to buy the 75,000-dwt Cielo di Houston (built 2019) from its bareboat charter over the next year.
It also intends to exercise purchase options on four MRs in the fleet.
