The Egyptian navy has taken control of a detained UAE-owned suezmax and was reported to be taking it into the port of Ain Sukhna.

Crew on the 163,000-dwt Sea Shark (built 1991), which has been held by Egypt for six months, said it was underway on Tuesday from an anchorage in the Red Sea.

"Vessel is conned by Egyptian navy forces and Egyptian pilot who boarded the vessel," the crew said in email.

"As per our estimation vessel is proceeding to Ain Sukhna terminal."

AIS data has no update after 19 May.

The crew also said 10 of their colleagues had been taken from the ship to a Suez naval base on 19 May.

These included five Ukrainians, two Indians, a Russian and two Filipinos.

Egypt had demanded that the seafarers unload their crude cargo due to a possible leak risk.

The tanker was held in December after drifting into Egypt's waters.

It is owned by Al Safeena Al Bahria Shipping of the UAE.

The crew of 31 includes Ukrainians, Russians, an Azerbaijani and 11 Filipinos, Sri Lankans and Indians.
