Libya's state-owned General National Maritime Transport Co (GNMTC) is in the process of renewing its aframax tanker fleet — replacing early 2000-built units with re-sale newbuildings.
Two of the recently acquired tankers have been reported as fixed out for up to 16 months on subjects at $20,000 per day.
The 114,000-dwt Fezzan (built 2021) is understood to have been taken by Clearlake, and the sistership Anwar Beghazi (built 2021) by Navig8. Both vessels were fixed for periods of eight months with options to double the terms.
The tankers were purchased last month from Singapore-based shipowner First Ship Lease Trust for a reported $52.5m each.
VesselsValue assesses their worth at about $44m each.
GNMTC does not comment on the charters, but said the tankers were built to suit the latest requirements, including scrubbers.
A third newbuilding — the 112,000-dwt Ionic Anemos (built 2020) — was purchased from Ionic Shipping of Greece for $56m in December last year.
Renamed Ebn Hawkel, it has been been fixed to Trafigura for six months at $16,750 per day plus options.
GNMTC is listed with 12 aframaxes.
It is also set to dispose of elderly units. In December, the 112,000-dwt Ebn Batuta (built 2002) was sold to Oryx Shipping of Greece for $11.4m.
European brokers reported that the 112,000-dwt Intisar and El Gurdabia (both built 2002) have also been sold to an undisclosed buyer.
A GNMTC spokesman said the ships “have been offered for sale, but so far they have not been sold. We are still in negotiations with some interested parties to buy”.
