Swedish shipowner Rederi Gotland is working on ways to mitigate losses in poor product carrier markets.

"The product tanker market has been very weak during the year, which has meant a significant loss so far," the company said.

The shipowner added that its Gotland Tankers unit is "working on various measures in order to improve the outcome going forward".

Rederi Gotland has been contacted for further information.

The company owns four 53,000-dwt MR tankers operating in the Maersk Tankers pool. These were all built in China between 2006 and 2008.

The group also has a 50% stake in two more MRs operated by Stena Bulk and managed by Wisby Tankers.

Charters for the 49,900-dwt Wisby Atlantic and Wisby Pacific (both built 2017) were renewed by Stena at $15,750 per day in November last year.

Then there are six ro-paxes operated by the Destination Gotland unit.

Profit bolstered by ferries

Rederi Gotland did not break its financial results down into ship types.

Net earnings in the eight months to 31 August was SEK 220m ($25.6m) as passenger numbers grew again, compared with SEK 111m in the same period of last year.

Revenue was up at SEK 1.62bn, from SEK 1.39bn a year ago.

At the end of August, the company opened a new ferry line between Nynashamn in Sweden and Rostock in Germany.

The launch has involved an unspecified investment during the start-up phase, but the route is supported by Swedish state subsidies into next year.

The shipowner described the venture as a "long-term investment that in the long run can contribute to the group's result".
