Mexican shipowner Grupo TMM is keeping it in the family by promoting vice president Vanessa Serrano Cuevas to chief executive.

The entrepreneur, who has a second career as an online wellness guru under a pseudonym, replaces her long-serving father Jose Serrano Segovia, who is also the chairman.

Serrano Cuevas was previously in charge of TMM's energy division, having joined in 2018.

Before that, she founded the food company Dasami, as well as the digital platform Zertu on YouTube, where she provides yoga classes under the name Ness Zertu.

Segovia said: "We pledge our support to Vanessa Serrano Cuevas and we are confident that her leadership abilities will contribute not only to the creation of new alliances and business partnerships, but also to consolidate the projects that we have been developing at Grupo TMM.”

Serrano Cuevas graduated with a masters in business administration from IPADE.

She is a certified 500-hour ayurvedic yoga teacher.

The executive has said she created the Zertu platform to promote her philosophy of life and the pursuit of peace.

TMM's fleet of 33 owned ships includes an MR tanker and a floating storage and offloading unit, plus platform supply vessels, anchor-handling tug supply ships, crew boats and tugs. It also has bulker, shipyard and terminals interests.

Its second-quarter net loss was MXN 47.3m ($2.17m), compared with a MXN 40.6m profit the year before.
