International Seaways has reportedly flipped one of its MR tankers, probably at a premium.
Several brokers are reporting that the New York tanker giant sold the 48,000-dwt Pacific Jewel (built 2009) for between $23.7m and $25m.
A buyer was not disclosed and Seaways did not respond to a request for comment.
Even at the low end, the price comes at a slight premium to VesselsValue’s $22.8m estimate.
Cleaves said the sale price was “broadly in line with the benchmark set” when Ardmore Shipping sold the 50,000-dwt Ardmore Seafarer (built 2010).
It is lower than d’Amico International Shipping’s sale of the 47,200-dwt Glenda Melanie (built 2010) for $27.4m last week.
The price is also slightly lower than Clarksons’ estimates, which pegs a 15-year-old, 47,000-dwt MR tanker at $26m, a price that has firmed by 5% so far this year.
The shipbroking giant listed a 10-year-old, 50,000-dwt MR at $38m, firming by 13% since the new year.
The Pacific Jewel deal follows International Seaways’ purchase of six MRs from Wayzata Investment Partners last month for $232m, 15% of which was stock.
The vessel trades in the Norden Tanker Pool like several of International Seaways’ older product tankers.
International Seaways’ website lists 35 MR tankers in its fleet, not counting the six Wayzata vessels.
Including the Wayzata and Pacific Jewel deals, the company is left with 40 MR tankers.
