Norway’s Klaveness Combination Carriers (KCC) is hoping to drive collaboration on decarbonisation by joining the Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI).
The Oslo-listed owner of vessels that carry both wet and dry cargoes becomes only the fifth shipowner to be a current member of the organisation, alongside Maersk, Swire, Oldendorff and IMC.
KCC said it is now part of a growing community of leaders across the shipping ecosystem working together to catalyse progress toward a sustainable maritime sector.
SSI brings together leading organisations with shared goals and an equal determination to improve the sustainability of the shipping industry in terms of social, environmental, and economic impacts, it added.
The 17 members also include charterers, banks and classification societies.
KCC has been reducing the amount of time its ships spend in ballast by switching between tanker and bulker cargoes on different journey legs.
The Torvald Klaveness-backed owner is also pursuing a comprehensive energy efficiency programme across its fleet using innovative and cutting-edge technology.
“The complex sustainability challenges that shipping faces today require collaborative, multi-faceted solutions that address environmental, social and socio-economic concerns,” according to Andrew Stephens, SSI’s executive director.
He added SSI looks forward to learning from KCC’s current initiatives spanning safety, the ship lifecycle and energy efficiency.
“By working with KCC, we hope to influence and shine a light on actionable changes the sector can make, amplifying the positive impact of company actions for a more sustainable future,” Stephens said.
Welcomed at Geneva meeting
KCC chief executive Engebret Dahm said: “We believe collaboration with other like-minded companies across the shipping industry is key to succeeding with these ambitions and look forward to KCC’s active participation in SSI together with SSI’s other esteemed members and secretariat.”
The company was part of SSI’s bi-annual meeting in Geneva last month, hosted by commodities group Bunge.
Two other recent recruits were also welcomed: Swire Bulk and Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.
SSI was formed in tandem with industry leaders ABN Amro, BP Shipping, Gearbulk, Lloyd’s Register and Maersk.
RightShip, South32 and Wilhelmsen Shipmanagement also feature on the current member list.
