Marinvest has reportedly disposed of one of its LR1 tankers as the Swedish private tanker owner increasingly concentrates on MR methanol-fuelled ships for charter to Methanex.

Brokers said the shipowner has sold the 75,000-dwt Maritina (built 2006) to an undisclosed buyer for $12.5m.

The price tag is within the wide range of expectations, with UK-based valuation platform VesselsValue estimating that the tanker is worth just $10.5m and Maritime Strategies International predicting $12.7m.

The Maritina is due for special survey in the coming March.

Marinvest chief executive Patrick Mossberg did not respond to requests for comment on reports of the sale.

The Swedish shipowner had traditionally concentrated on LR1 tankers, with six of the product carriers built between 2006 and 2008 in its fleet.

But since 2018 Waterfront Shipping — a joint venture between Marinvest, NYK Line, Meiji Shipping, KSS Line and Mitsui OSK Lines — has taken delivery of a series of dual-fuel MR tankers from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) that can run on both methanol and conventional fuels.

The vessels are all on are on charter to Methanex, a Canadian methanol producer.

Waterfront took delivery of its first tanker newbuildings in 2016, earlier this month it confirmed an order for additional eight MR tanker newbuildings from HMD. The eight new ships are set for delivery between 2021 and 2023. It is not clear how many tankers each owner will be responsible for.
