The Tokyo and Paris MOU port state organisations will start warning ship crews next month about the pending IMO 2020 low-sulphur fuel rules.

They will start issuing a letter of warning from 1 January on the sulphur content of bunkers during inspections "in order to increase awareness of and to encourage timely compliance with the new requirements," the bodies said.

The letters will be handed to seafarers on vessels found not yet ready for compliance with the rules that will enter into force on 1 January 2020.
