Torm has reportedly sold one of its oldest MR product tankers at a slight premium.
The Danish owner offloaded the 47,000-dwt Torm Platte (built 2006) for about $22m, according to broker reports.
A buyer was not disclosed. Torm declined to comment on the sale.
The agreement is another data point showing a strong sales-and-purchase market for tankers.
Cleaves noted the Torm Platte sale alongside the 51,000-dwt Hansa Oslo (built 2007) and its $22.5m price tag.
VesselsValue suggested the Torm Platte is worth just under $20m and the $22m sale price beats the $18.4m Saudi Arabia’s Bahri attained for the 49,000-dwt Bhari Tulip (built 2006) earlier this year.
It is also roughly in line with the $22.5m secured by Flynn Ventures for the 48,700-dwt Fos (built 2007). Both those ships were sold in late January.
It also comes as Schoeller Holding sold two 2009-built handysize tankers for $22m each, up from the $12m the German-controlled company paid for them in 2021.
The Torm Platte was sold to Teekay Corp while under construction at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in 2004 for $50m, then sold to Torm in 2008 for an undisclosed price, according to data from VesselsValue.
Clarksons lists 86 ships in Torm’s fleet of product tankers, spanning the MR, LR1 and LR2 segments, and the Torm Platte is the company’s seventh-oldest ship.
Torm spent much of the back half of 2023 selling off ageing tonnage, including 10 sales of ships averaging 18.4 years old, VesselsValue data shows.
Sale prices were not available for all ships, but Torm was able to sell the 109,700-dwt Torm Marina (built 2007) for $36.6m in November and the 75,000-dwt Torm Estrid and Torm Ismini (both built 2004) for $20m each.
