Trafigura has joined the stable of commodity traders opting for scrubbers on new ships to meet new emissions legislation.
Trafigura joins peers including Cargill and Vitol in throwing its weight behind the technology, which has posed as many questions as answers for many shipowners.
Last year Trafigua amassed a 32 strong crude and product tanker orderbook and has since added VLGCs to the backlog.
The first of the tankers will be delivered in October this year.
“All will be equipped with scrubbers,” Reuters quotes the company to have said.
TradeWinds reported last week Trafigura had doubled its VLGC orderbook at Hyundai Heavy Industries after taking up options on two more VLGCs at the world’s largest shipbuilder for delivery in 2020.
Despite the major tanker order Trafigura has pledged it will remain a major charterer of tonnage.
“These will supplement our current portfolio of leased tankers and will enable us to continue to extract full value of the cargo infrastructure,” it has said.
