A Vroon-operated tanker has spilled bunker fuel in the Mississippi River in the US.

Vroon tanker company Iver Ships told TradeWinds that the amount of the leak from the 46,000-dwt Iver Exporter (built 2000) has yet to be determined.

It confirmed there was an accidental release of heavy fuel oil from a bunker tank at approximately 1am on Monday near the Shell Norco complex in Louisiana.

"The source of the release has been secured," it added.

"The crew notified their emergency response contractors who responded to the scene and started clean-up operations.

"The incident is under investigation and Iver Ships, as operator of the vessel, is working closely with the Coast Guard and other officials."

It added that more information will be provided as it becomes available.

The vessel is listed as owned by MOL of Japan and managed by Vroon.

There were no waterway closures or restrictions due to the incident.

OMI Environmental Solutions, an oil spill response organisation, was at the scene and responding to the spill, KSLA TV reported.
