Weco Shipping of Denmark has denied suggestions it is making an exit from shipowning after a tanker sale leaves it with a fleet of just one owned ship.

But the company confirmed the sale of the 40,000-dwt product and chemical tanker Kronborg (built 2007).

US brokers said the ship, built at the former SLS Shipbuilding, has gone to a Vietnamese buyer for $12m.

Weco board member Johnny Schmolker said: "We can confirm that Kronborg has been sold as part of continued renewal of our fleet. We will not elaborate further on the actual deal."

The sale of the Kronborg would leave the shipowner with just one tanker on the water, according to shipping databases.

Schmolker sharply denied that Weco now is set for an exit from shipowning. He said that among other projects, it will take delivery of two ultramax bulker newbuildings at the end of this month.

Schmolker said the company, owned by Johan Wedell-Wedellsborg, will continue as both shipowner and ship operator across the dry bulk, tanker, ro-ro and multipurpose ship sectors.

Weco RoRo is also listed as having four small newbuildings that are set for delivery from China’s Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering this year.
