An entry-level system to collect vessel performance data from on board ships has been launched by ABB for owners that have yet to go digital.
The Swiss engineering group said its ABB Ability OneBox — Marine Signals Monitoring system will transfer signals from shipboard sensors to cloud infrastructure for access and analysis by shipowners.
It is aimed at meeting growing market demand for a straightforward entry to digitalisation, ABB said, pushed in part by the need to decarbonise shipping,
Increased insight into and reporting of ships' performance is becoming required by regulation to reduce CO2 emissions by cutting fuel consumption.
Information gathered by OneBox would enable shipowners to calculate fuel consumption and evaluate the need for any action to ensure compliance with the International Maritime Organization Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index and Carbon Intensity Indicator targets, ABB said.
"Many in merchant shipping [are] seeking a cost-efficient way to kick-start their digital transformation journey," said Antto Shemeikka, head of digital services, ABB Marine & Ports.
"OneBox can be implemented quickly, cost efficiently and with minimum effort, and upgraded seamlessly to keep pace with changing digital demands."
Commissioning of OneBox can be performed on board or remotely, ABB said, and it is compatible with any platform that allows data analysis and interpretation. It can also be scaled up to include sensors from additional equipment
Owners can integrate signals from the Electronic Chart Display & Information System, fuel systems, engines and shaft power meter, Shemeikka added.
