A former global head of data and digital at Lloyd's Register has been named as the new chief executive of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST).
Gwynne Lewis, who will begin the role on 29 June, takes over from David Loosley who is leaving to take up the post of secretary general and chief executive of Bimco.
Gwynne has a “passion for everything marine”, according to Richard Vie, chair of the IMarEST board of trustees.
“We are delighted to have found a successor to continue David Loosley’s superb work in transforming the institute,” he added.
“Gwynne … brings a great deal of experience to the role, with knowledge of the shipping and offshore industries, navies, marine science and marine technology.”
Vie said Gwynne is well-placed to chart a path that helps the institute become a “strong and sustainable” organisation.
According to Lewis' LinkedIn profile, he spent the past five months as a consultant after working as a maritime product line director at Orolia, a technology company.
Before that, he spent almost nine years as global head of data, digital and software at classification society Lloyd's Register, where he started as head of product development in 2009.
Lewis said he is “passionate about our industry” and the “sustainability of the maritime economy and ecosystem”.
“There are many challenges we face as individuals, an industry and a society, but there has likely never been a more important time for marine engineers, scientists and technologists to make a real a difference in the world,” he said.
“The institute will have a very important role to play in adapting, as it always has done, to meet the demands of its present and future members."
