Genco Shipping & Trading is beefing up its senior management team with the hire of Cargill veteran Robert Hughes as chief operating officer.

Hughes joins the New York-listed company after spending the last five years at Cargill Ocean Transport, most recently as its Americas operations and global technical manager.

Prior to Cargill, Hughes held posts at OSG Ship Management, Stolt-Nielsen and the US Merchant Marines.

“Genco has built a strong reputation in the industry, and I am delighted to join the company during such an exciting time,” Hughes said in a statement.

“Genco has taken important steps to enhance its industry leadership and I look forward to working with the team to continue to meet the highest operational standards for our customers.”

Genco's chief executive John Wobensmith touted Hughes' leadership and knowledge of the dry bulk industry.

"With the addition of Robert to our global team of dry bulk professionals in New York, Singapore and Copenhagen, we have further strengthened our platform and ability to meet the exacting needs of our customers," Wobensmith said.

Genco has been moving away from being simply a tonnage provider and developing its operating platform.
