Peace Boat co-founder and director Yoshioka Tatsuya says there is a high possibility that there will still be a place for the Ocean Dream even after the Ecoship is delivered.

The organisation’s current vessel is a rarity in East Asia, where gambling vessels or mega-ships dominate, so it could be used for educational cruises in the region, possibly in co-operation with a university.

Tatsuya acknowledges that the 36-year-old ship runs on conventional fuel, but he points out that its cruises contribute to environmental education and carry out environmental projects such as beach clean-ups.

“I would like to prove that even though we are using a conventional ship, we can do a lot in other ways,” he said.
