The Shipping 2015 festivities began at 11:30 Monday morning with a luncheon hosted by the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA).

Both men and women attended the gathering, which was capped by a presentation from the organisation’s president, MF Shipping Group chief executive Karin Orsel.

The conference itself began at 2:00 pm with opening remarks and a keynote address led by Admiral Paul Thomas, the US Coast Guard’s assistant commandant for prevention policy.

This was followed by a discussion about the state of the shipping industry, which was moderated by Robert Bishop, the executive director of V. Group and vice chairman of Intertanko, and Peter Hinchliffe, the Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping.

Panellists included the likes of Matt Morooka, chief executive of NYK Bulk & Project Carriers, industry veteran Nicholas Pappadakis of Pappadakis & Co and Intertanko chairman Nikolas Tsakos, the chief executive of Tsakos Energy Navigation.

The first day of Shipping 2015 will conclude at 5:30 pm with a cocktail reception hosted by The Marshall Island Registry.

On Tuesday, many attendees tell TradeWinds that they intend to check out a panel discussion with Art Regan of Principal Maritime Management and the chief executive of diversified New York-quoted operator Ship Finance International, Ole Hjertaker.

The conference concludes at 5:30 Wednesday evening with a Gala Reception hosted by the American Bureau of Shipping.

A formal dinner sponsored by Seward & Kissel and DNV GL begins two hours later, which is when Captain Panagiotis Tsakos will be crowned commodore of the CMA.

The presentation will be led by the president of Scorpio Tankers and Scorpio Bulkers, Robert Bugbee, who was honoured with the same award in 2014.
