Liverpool’s massive dock wall launched a few months ago has taken a hit due to a sinkhole.

A 10-metre wide and 6-metre deep cavity has appeared on the site, one of Britain’s biggest infrastructure developments, the Financial Times (FT) reported.

Peel Holdings, the property conglomerate that owns the docks, said it was investigating.

A spokeswoman told the FT: “We have secured the affected area and our contractors and their technical experts are conducting a full assessment to understand the root cause.

“Once this has been completed, a programme of remedial works will be developed and deployed.”

When trade secretary Liam Fox opened the dock three months ago, he said it would be Britain’s post-Brexit “link to the world”.

The new dock has been built to accommodate the world’s largest vessels but only one shipping line has used the facility so far.

Operations at the terminal have not been affected due to the sinkhole, the FT reported.
