Maersk Line is exploring alternative solutions for its cargoes that have been affected by the diplomatic conflict between Qatar and its neighbors.

The boxship owner is ceasing cargo acceptance between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with immediate effect, according to a customer note provided to TradeWinds.

Maersk added major ports in the Middle East such as DP World Jebel Ali and Abu Dhabi Terminals no longer accept cargo to and from Qatari ports, including transhipment cargo.

DP World confirmed to TradeWinds yesterday that "vessels with the flag of Qatar or vessels destined to or arriving from Qatar are not allowed to call at any DP World terminals in the UAE until further notice."

Maersk has temporarily closed booking for cargo from the rest of the world that transship over Jebel Ali to and from Qatar.

The company is expected to find a solution to ensure movement of cargo over the coming 48 hours.

Arab nations cut diplomatic ties with Qatar earlier this week as they accuse the oil-rich nation of funding extremism.

As TradeWinds reported earlier today, the latest development has already impacted the crude tanker market.

Suez Canal unaffected so far

An issue that was widely discussed within the shipping industry was if the Suez Canal would be closed to Qatari vessels.

Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has not replied to an e-mail request for comment.

Egypt-based shipping agents told TradeWinds that no official announcement has been made as of today and no disruption has been observed this morning.
