The Mexican navy has seized marijuana hidden on an MSC boxship after crew alerted authorities.

The 50 packages totalling 57.5kg were found concealed under plastic in the sea chest of the engine room while the vessel was at Manzanillo.

The vessel was en route from Peru to Tokyo.

It was back underway on Monday.

MSC told TradeWinds that crew informed authorities after routine maintenance checks resulted in the discovery.

It added: "MSC takes such matters very seriously and we will continue to cooperate with the authorities, as we always do when confronted by suspected trafficking of illicit goods.

"Unfortunately, MSC, like other transportation companies, is affected from time to time by trafficking problems, even though we are meticulous about our internal processes and documentation procedures.

"MSC is in general committed to working with all regulatory bodies to ensure illegal practices of this nature are dealt with promptly and thoroughly.”
