MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company is slashing transit times for cargo shipped from continental Europe to US east coast ports.

Starting in March, the liner giant's new MedUSEC service is set to reach New York from the major transshipment hub of Sines, Portugal, in seven days due to service improvements.

The Swiss company said the upgrades will cut up to four days in reaching ports such as Baltimore, Norfolk, Savannah and Charleston.

MSC could not immediately say which of its vessels or how many would travel across the Atlantic Ocean.

The new rotation will first visit Morocco's Tangiers before reaching the European ports of Valencia, Gioia Tauro, Naples, Leghorn, Genoa, Valencia again, Algeciras and Sines.

It will then head across the Atlantic Ocean to hit the US eastern ports of New York, Baltimore, Norfolk, Savannah and Charleston, MSC said.

The new route drops the ports of Boston and La Spezia but adds Tangiers.

At the same time, MSC’s MedGulf westbound service will add Algeciras, while the eastbound service will now call at Miami and Algeciras.

Due to the changes, the MedGulf service will go to Sines, Algeciras, Barcelona, Gioia Tauro, Naples, La Spezia, Barcelona again, Valencia, Algeciras and back to Sines.

From there, it will cross the Atlantic and stop at Florida's Freeport and Port Everglades and the Mexican cities of Veracruz and Altamira.

It will then return to the US coast, calling at Houston, New Orleans, Miami and Freeport.
