A new Lomar Shipping containership has run aground on a reef in the South Pacific.

The 2,190-teu Kea Trader (built 2017) got stuck en route from Papeete to Noumea on the Durand reefs off Mare, New Caledonia on Wednesday morning, the LNC website reported.

AIS data showed the ship remained aground on Wednesday.

Lomar confirmed to TradeWinds that the ship went aground 90 nautical miles south-east of New Caledonia.

The crew of 18 was uninjured and there have been no visible traces or reports of any immediate pollution from the vessel, it said.

"The situation is currently stable and the weather forecast is good for the coming days," it added.

Lomar has activated its emergency response centre and is coordinating with all relevant authorities and organisations.

A salvage team is already at the site providing support.

The company is also working with technical experts to discuss when and how the vessel should be refloated.

An internal company investigation will work alongside the official inquiry to thoroughly examine this incident, the company pledged.

A Lomar spokesman said: “We are grateful for the rapid help and support that has been given since the vessel ran aground. We are currently working with the authorities and other industry experts to determine when and how the vessel is to be refloated.”
