Samsung Heavy Industries said it has delivered the “world’s largest” containership three weeks ahead of schedule.

The Korean yard delivered the 23,756-teu MSC Gulsun (built 20019) to Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) on Saturday.

The vessel, which sailed from Samsung’s Geoje shipyard, is the first of six sister ships being built for the Swiss-based shipowner.

MSC has another five sister vessels under constriction at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) with delivery between mid-2019 and the first quarter of 2020.

The MSC Gulsun measures 400 meters in length, has a beam of 61.5 meters wide and stands 33.2 meters high, according to the shipbuilder.

Samsung said it was the first shipbuilder to build a container ship with a capacity of over 20,000-teu after it won an order from Mitsui OSK Lines to build four 20,100-teu ships in 2015.

However, it remains to be seen how long Samsung will hold the record.

DSME is building a series of 23,000-teu containerships for Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) with the first due for delivery in August next year.
