Nasdaq-listed Eagle Bulk has declared options to fit 15 more exhaust gas cleaning systems to its fleet.

The move follows its original announcement in September that it would use 19 scrubbers, with 18 options attached.

The company intends to complete the 34 installations by 1 January, 2020, when the IMO's low-sulphur fuel rules come into force.

Eagle Bulk, in partnership with a global engineering firm, has developed a scrubber installation programme whereby a significant amount of the required retrofit work will be carried out on the vessels while at sea.

This reduces off-hire time compared with a typical shipyard installation, it said.

In October, it indicated the majority of the options would be used.

"We think it's a compelling investment, therefore I think it's likely that you'll see more options as time goes on," chief executive Gary Vogel said last month.

Vogel reaffirmed that Eagle plans to continue its fleet renewal programme but is pointing its capital at scrubbers at the moment-- possibly $74m for all 37 -- to meet the 2020 deadline.

The company has 48 vessels.
