A 55-year-old Greek officer died early on Wednesday after fire broke out in the engine room of the bulker he served on as second engineer.

The incident occured on the 92,500-dwt Faneromeni (built 2007) as the vessel was sailing in the Arabian Sea, Greek coastguards told TradeWinds.

A source at Marmaras Navigation, the vessel's management company, said that the fire had just a small extent and was extinguished by the crew on its own means.

There are no reports of environmental damage from the incident.

According to the coastguards, the post-panamax is still drifting in the Indian Ocean. Assistance has been requested to get the third engineer off the vessel - a 26-year-old Greek who requires medical attention after inhaling toxic smoke.

The incident is taking place within the responsibility area of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre of Mumbai.

The Faneromeni had been en route ballasting from Fujeirah to Port Elizabeth in South Africa.

The post-panamax has 18 seafarers on board, including five Greeks. It is flying the Greek flag and is insured with the London P&I Club. The Faneromeni has been trading with Marmaras since being delivered as a newbuilding by Sungdong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering.

Back in November, a Greek captain died in a fire on board a Maran Dry Management bulker off the coast of Brazil, without causing other injuries or environmental damage. The blaze broke out in the early morning hours on the 276,600-dwt Ore Sudbury's (built 1991) third accommodation deck and was extinguished by the crew.
