Greek interests have fought off stiff competition to land a Japanese bulker in a rare sale of a very modern ship.

Brokers reported that Japan’s Dowa Line had put the 61,200-dwt Global Royal (built 2022) up for sale.

The ship, built at the Dalian Cosco KHI joint venture yard in China, attracted several bidders, but an unnamed buyer ended up paying $34.25m.

VesselsValue had assessed the ship as worth $33.6m, down from $36.6m a year ago.

Dowa Line has eight bulkers, including the sister ship World Royal. The rest are handysizes.

The Japanese company could not immediately be contacted for comment.

Brokers also reported the Chinese-built 63,500-dwt ultramax All Star Atlas (built 2014) offloaded for $24.5m for delivery in the third quarter.

The buyer is not yet known. M/Maritime acquired the ship for an undisclosed price in 2017 from fellow Greek owner Ariston Navigation.

VesselsValue has a value of $22.4m on the bulker, against $25.5m 12 months ago.

More deals coming

Norwegian shipbroker Cleaves noted fewer panamax and kamsarmax sales, however.

But some deals were said to be well advanced, and these will show a “good improvement” in prices over last-done levels, the broker added.

Supramaxes have been in great demand, with up to 12 changing hands in April.

TradeWinds reported this week that US-listed Eagle Bulk Shipping had sold three vessels of this size acquired two years ago.

European brokers reported the 2011-built trio has been offloaded for at least $16m each or $48m in total, against an outlay of about $30m in February 2021.

The Chinese-built 58,000-dwt Sankaty Eagle, Montauk Eagle and Newport Eagle were bought from US owner Alterna Capital.

The new buyer is not known.

Cleaves said activity remains high in bulker sale-and-purchase circles, despite a more sluggish freight market with rates moving sideways.
