John Platsidakis will step down from his position as top executive of the Angelicoussis Group, confirming market rumours in Athens he is to leave the post.

"I am honoured and glad for the opportunity I had to be part of this great company for the last 32 years," he told TradeWinds.

Platsidakis has been managing director of the group's dry bulk outfit Maran Dry Management, previously known as Anangel Maritime Services. He has also been a director of the overall Angelicoussis Group, which includes Maran Tankers Management and Maran Gas Maritime.

Platsidakis clarified his departure is on “very good terms” with the John Angelicoussis-owned company. He also said it is yet too early to determine what his next step will be.

"I am looking forward to allocating time for myself and various topics that I am interested in," he said.

His engagement with shipping, however, will be difficult to let go. "If something interesting comes up in shipping, I will certainly look at it," he said.

Platsidakis joined the Angelicoussis Group at the end of the 1980s after serving for ten years at Bank of America in Athens, Piraeus, and London and later as finance director of Marmaras Navigation.

A straight-talking manager, Platsidakis played an active role in international maritime policy from various positions, notably as chairman of Intercargo between 2012 and 2018, as well as as a board member of Intertanko, the Union of Greek Shipowners and the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping.

Platsidakis has studied mathematics in Thessaloniki, operational research at the London School of Economics and econometrics at Southampton University.

A father to two daughters who are both maritime English solicitors, Platsidakis has also been an active supporter of maritime education as a member of the Council of Maritime Education at Greece’s merchant marine ministry.
