K Line has ordered three low-carbon bulkers at Nihon Shipyard.

The giant Japanese shipowner said the 92,000-dwt coal carriers will be methanol-ready.

The 229-metre ships are post-panamaxes of a new design developed by the shipbuilder and constitute the next generation of K Line’s Corona series.

These are wide-beam, shallow-draft coal carriers optimally designed to bring coal to power plants in Japan.

“In pursuit of a further reduction in the environmental burden through greater fuel economy, the new ship is expected to achieve a 40% improvement in CO2 emissions efficiency,” K Line said.

Nihon Shipyard will use the newest main engine design and fit energy-saving accessories.

No price has been given for the vessels.

Under its Environmental Vision 2050, the shipowner aims to reach net zero emissions by 2050 using “highly eco-friendly” fuels and wind power.

The group has one other bulker on order, an ultramax at Imabari Shipyard that is to be built using green steel made by JFE Steel. It is scheduled for delivery in 2026.

JFE has reported that improvements in efficiencies and emissions reduction in its facilities allow for it to call 200,000 tonnes of its products green steel.

K Line also has two LNG carriers and five car carriers under construction. The group has 274 vessels operational.
