More cocaine has been found hidden on the German-managed bulker Trudy in the Netherlands.

Customs officers discovered 529kg of the drug on the 30,800-dwt Trudy (built 2009) in Rotterdam in the week ending 29 October, Crimesite reported.

The cocaine was found in the port side of a hold on the handysize in 29 packages.

The Rotterdam public prosecution service estimates the street value of the drug at almost €40m ($46m).

The drugs have since been destroyed.

At the start of October, French authorities found 1.13 tonnes of the narcotic in the vessel after it arrived in Dunkirk from Brazil.

The original crew of 20, a mix of Russians, Ukrainians, Filipinos and Ethiopians, plus the Romanian captain, were arrested but quickly released, reports said on 1 October.

Of these, 19 were subsequently charged and 15 of them remained in custody in the second week of October.

Vessel raided by armed gang

The bulker has since called at Antwerp in Belgium, and the prosecutor said Rotterdam was its final destination.

A week after the Dunkirk raid, a gang armed with wooden sticks raided the vessel at the port, threatening the replacement crew.

It now appears likely these men were searching for the drugs that had not been seized by French customs officials.

German commercial manager Minship represents the vessel's owners, who are financial investors.

Minship confirmed the incident, saying the crew members were held against their will.

The company has been contacted for comment about the latest find.

The vessel is insured with the North of England P&I Club.
