Shipowner New Horizon is entering the supramax arena with the purchase of a 10-year-old ship, brokers said.

According to reports, the Greek shipowner has acquired the 58,700-dwt Angel B (built 2008) for $14.15m.

Market rumours initially suggested that Thoresen Shipping had picked up the Tsuneishi Cebu-built ship. Sources close to Thoresen, however, quickly dismissed that information.

Managers at Piraeus-based New Horizon did not respond to an e-mail requesting comment by press time.

If confirmed, this would be their company’s first supramax since it was established in 2013 and its first fleet expansion since the summer 2016.

New Horizon would not be the only Greek company to emerge as a supramax buyer this week.

A purchase of the Angel B would also be in line with New Horizon’s stated ambition to expand in a non-aggressive way to a fleet of between three and five vessels.

Including the Angel B, New Horizon’s fleet is made up of four vessels with two handysize general cargoships and one handymax bulker.

New Horizon was founded by Konstantinos Maounis, Manolis Malahias and Panagiotis Manolis-Patsouris -- scions of traditional Greek shipping families with a history of several decades as captains and later owners of general cargoships and bulkers up to 50,000 dwt.
