Thoresen Shipping has emerged as the buyer of a ten-year-old supramax bulker reported sold for $13.8m just before Christmas.

A spokesperson for the shipowner said he was unable to comment on sale and purchase activity, citing Thai Stock Exchange disclosure rules.

However, a source close to the Bangkok-based shipowner confirmed that it had acquired the 58,700-dwt Albion (built 2008).

TradeWinds reported in mid-December that Union Maritime had sold the vessel to an unnamed buyer after less than six months of ownership.

The UK-based shipowner bought the Tsuneishi Zhoushan-built ship as the Tenko Maru for $8.7m from Japan’s Kambara Kisen.

Sources close to Thoresen also told TradeWinds that it was not behind the purchase of the 58,679-dwt Angel B (built 2008) as had been reported by several brokers.

Late last month Monaco-based Transocean Maritime Agencies was reported to be looking to flip the supramax on the back of rising asset values.

The ship was bought from the creditors of collapsed Japanese shipowner United Ocean in April 2016 for a reported $8.1m.

Thoresen was fairly active in the sale and purchase market in 2017 making three secondhand vessel purchases.

These comprised the 58,700-dwt Songa Marlin (built 2009), the 58,500-dwt Crystal Palace (built 2008) and the 54,000-dwt Karaweik (built 2006).
