Crew on a BW Group bulker have contained an engine room fire that broke out off Yemen on Friday.

The Singapore company confirmed the incident on the 83,000-dwt, Isle of Man-flagged BW Acorn (built 2010) and said the situation was under control.

The UK Coastguard had earlier reported the vessel was drifting and not under command while requesting assistance.

The Coastguard had put out a request for any vessel with firefighting capability to proceed to the scene.

The bulker, operated by BW Maritime, was heading from Fangcheng in China to Suez.

A BW Group spokeswoman told TradeWinds the fire had been contained.

No injuries reported

"Our captain and crew are safe," she added.

There have been no injuries and no pollution. But the company's priority is minimising any potential impact to the environment, she said.

The ship was using emergency power following the blaze.

"The company will launch a full investigation," the spokeswoman added.

The vessel is classed by Japan's ClassNK and has insurance cover from the North P&I Club.

It has a clean port-state control inspection record.

The BW Acorn, the former Meteor, has been under BW's ownership since 2016.

It was acquired for $12.3m from Amber Ocean Corp.
