A car carrier that caught fire in the English Channel is sailing again, apparently with no problems.

There were concerns that the 3,877-ceu RCC Passion (built 2011) would be the latest in a series of serious car-carrier fires this year after emergency services were called to assist it 74 km (46 miles) west of Ushant Island last week.

The Ray Car Carriers-controlled ship had just left the French port of Le Havre. The seas were heavy at the time, with Beaufort scale six winds and five-metre swells.

Six firefighters were winched onto the RCC Passion to tackle the engine room blaze and the 3,200-gt tug Abeille Bourbon (built 2005) came to the ship’s assistance.

However, the fire was put out the next day and the vessel was able to make it to the port of Brest under its own power for repairs.

It appears that the damage was not serious, and it is understood there has been no cargo damage.

AIS data shows the ship has resumed its original voyage to Fort-de-France on the Atlantic island of Martinique and is expected to arrive on 16 December.

The vessel’s protection and indemnity insurance is provided by North P&I.
