A Greek ferry has rescued a four-year-old girl who had drifted out to sea on an inflatable unicorn.

The crew of the 1,000-gt ropax Salaminomachos (built 2008) was plying its regular route between Rio and Antirrio on Monday when it was alerted to the situation.

The child had been swimming with her parents on a beach when strong currents took the inflatable into deeper water.

"As I was approaching the port of Antirrio, I was informed by the port authority that a child with an inflatable toy had been swept away by the currents. I located her and left directly for her rescue," master Grigoris Karnesis told Mega TV.

"She was in a state of shock. She was clinging on this inflatable toy and did not move, she was frozen. When she saw us approaching, she shrieked."

Ramp rescue

Video footage showed the ship moving towards the girl with its vehicle ramp down, allowing crew to grab her and the toy.

The master said both the child and her mother were in a state of shock after the incident.

The vessel is owned by Kyxreas Shipping.
