Ocean Network Express has finally put pen to paper on an order for a dozen methanol dual-fuel 13,000-teu container ship newbuildings in China.

It said the order represents its inaugural fleet of methanol-fuelled vessels and plays a key role in reaching its sustainability goals.

The Singapore-based liner company revealed that state-owned Jiangnan Shipyard and Singapore-listed Yangzijiang Shipbuilding will build six vessels each.

News of ONE awarding the contract to the two Chinese yards was first reported in TradeWinds in November 2023.

“These vessels are designed with capabilities to be flexible and agile, which will seamlessly integrate into ONE’s evolving and dynamic global network,” said the liner giant.

“This investment and purchase are aligned with ONE’s stringent procurement policy aimed at meeting customer demand and being adaptable for any future change in global sustainable supply chains.

“In the current maritime and sustainability landscape, methanol is anticipated to hold significant potential for emission reduction.”

ONE said it will begin taking delivery from 2027.

It did not disclose the price, but newbuilding brokers believe the vessels are costing more than $160m each.

ONE said the newbuildings will include state-of-the-art technologies such as optimised hull form, waste heat recovery systems and bow windshield.

Selected vessels will also be equipped with an air lubrication system and shaft generator to help explore potential enhancements in fuel efficiency and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

“These innovations can help accelerate ONE’s decarbonisation efforts and ensure compliance … in line with regulations in the shipping industry,” the company said.

CEO Jeremy Nixon said the decision to invest in methanol dual-fuel vessels aligns with the company’s green strategy as part of its key initiatives.

“The upcoming new fleet is pivotal in achieving our goal of deploying the first alternative-fuel ships by 2030 and marks a significant milestone in our journey towards a greener and more sustainable maritime industry,” he said.

ONE has set a target to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions, encompassing Scope 2 and 3, by 2050.
