AP Moller-Maersk has finally put pen to paper for a series of feeder containership newbuildings at China’s Jiangnan Shipyard.

The Danish shipping company has signed up for five 2,500-teu newbuildings. The deal is said to include options for five more.

The containership giant has ordered the newbuildings through ICBC Leasing.

News of Maersk planning to order the feeder containerships was first reported in TradeWinds in last summer.

“Jiangnan was tipped to win Maersk’s newbuildings more than six months ago and at that time, the ships in discussions were the 2,200 teu,” said one shipbuilding source.

“The newbuildings contracts between the two are now officially inked.”

Shipbuilding experts believe Maersk is paying less than $30m each for the 2,500-teu newbuildings.

It is scheduled to take delivery of them from the first quarter of 2021.

The newbuildings will be classified by China Classification Society (CCS).
